Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery
Video-assisted thoracic surgery (also called VATS) is a less invasive option used today when compared to traditional open chest procedure (thoracotomy). An incision is made between the ribs to acquire a tissue sample. A tiny camera and surgical instruments are inserted through the incision. The camera transmits images onto a video monitor guiding the surgeon to the lesion where the tissue sample can be taken. Hospitalization is still required but the recovery time is potentially shorter than an open chest procedure. This procedure is done by a surgeon.
Both thoracotomy and video-assisted thoracotomy can produce a higher risk of complications. In addition, only patients who meet certain criteria are candidates for these procedures.
