Watchful Waiting

Watchful waiting is an approach in which time is allowed to pass before further medical intervention is considered. Repeated testing may be performed during this time, but it can also allow for malignant (cancerous) lesions to spread.8

In some cases of a spot on the lung your doctor may write a prescription for medication and have you return in a few months for another CT scan or x-ray to see if the spot went away, got smaller or changed in any way. This is commonly referred to as “watchful waiting.” Some people are not comfortable with waiting any length of time to find out what their spot could be. Talk to your doctor about waiting or some of the other options available to you. If you decide to take action, there are a number of options available to obtain a biopsy.
